Spring Parent Meeting Notes

Posted by Chatfield Charger Volleyball on Apr 04 2023 at 07:27AM PDT

Thanks to all who attended the first meeting of the upcoming season last night, April 3rd. For those that were unable to attend, the tentative schedule for important upcoming dates can be found attached to this post. The meeting notes are listed below and please reach out to Coach Schick with any questions or to be added to the email list!

About me: This fall will be my 17th season as head coach. I am a Chatfield grad and a TCU grad (Texas Christian Univ). I am also a part-time math teacher at Chatfield, which allows me to do what I love to do and be with my two elementary/middle school-aged daughters.
I am extremely passionate about my role as the head coach at Chatfield – this is what fills my buckets! I strive to be a transformational leader, rather than a transactional one – as do the other coaches on our staff, and we do this by putting our focus on building meaningful relationships with our athletes instead of just letting our focus stay on the surface level of playing the game of volleyball. Also, in our program we talk often about “the circle of volleyball life”: you have more fun when you play better volleyball and you play better volleyball when you have more fun.
We want all of our athletes to enjoy their time in our program and to have a quality experience.

About our program: We have 4 teams: Varsity, JV, Level 3, and Level 4. Athletes can play “above” their grade level, as their skill level demands, but cannot play “down”. For example, a junior is only eligible to play on JV or Varsity. We can keep a maximum of 14 athletes on each team (for a maximum total of 56 athletes).
Typically, we have around 80 athletes tryout for our program, so we do make cuts.
The coaches for our lower levels are incredible and I am so grateful most of them will be returning next season! Holly (JV) and Jonathan (L3) are the BEST. I’m on the search for a great L4 coach! Oh, and my husband, Ryan, helps me out as a varsity assistant coach, too.

Our season begins before the school year starts and goes through the end of October, with varsity hopefully continuing into November.
Our practice schedule is five weekdays per week: On Mondays through Thursdays, our practice times will be changing since our bell schedule will be different next school year. Practices times are TBD! (Maybe 3:45-6:00pm for L3 and L4, and 6:00-8:30pm for JV and V.) On Fridays all four teams practice together, most likely from 3:45-6:00pm.
Our matches (games) happen twice a week, mostly on weekdays. These are big time commitments, as we ask all four teams to be present for all four matches on each “match night”. Match times: L3 and L4 play at 4:30pm, JV plays at 5:30pm and varsity plays at 6:30pm.
We strongly encourage each athlete to purchase our “player pack” at the beginning of each season ($175-$200) which includes three practice shirts, a pair of match spandex, three pairs of socks, a hoodie, and a pair of sweatpants. This allows us to match during every practice, game, warm up, etc. Fundraisers: Our two biggest fundraisers are Snap! Raise (an online fundraising platform) and our all-program car wash – all hands on deck!

Important Dates
Open gyms – these are free, informal, and a great way for incoming 9th graders to get comfortable in our gym with our coaches (and for our returners to get back in the gym with us!) Beginning in June, current 8th grades are eligible to participate. (Not required) VB Strength and Conditioning Camp – Tuesday and Thursday mornings for the first six weeks of the summer. This is led by our head football coach, Coach Rosholt – we are so lucky to have his
expertise in this area! (Not required)
CSHVB Youth Camps – Meant for rising 1st-8th graders, which means current K-7th graders. Our CSHVB returners get to help run this camp as “high school helpers”, which is always a blast.
CSU Team Camp – By invitation. We invite our returning varsity, returning JV, and rising juniors.
CSHVB Volleyball camp – Not required, but strongly encouraged. This camp is a great lead-up to the following week of tryouts.
Fall Sports Registration due date – August 3. We refer to August 3 as a “soft deadline” – it would really help our athletic office if these registrations were completed this early. The registration window will open in mid-July. “Hard deadline” is the first day of tryouts – we cannot allow athletes to tryout if their registration has not been completed. This registration process includes a doctor’s physical.
Tryouts – Athletes should plan to attend all three days of tryouts, but we do make a first round of cuts at the end of the second day. Our process includes an individual conversation with every athlete at the conclusion of tryouts about where they stand – we do not post a list.
Mark your calendars for the pre-tryout parent meeting (Aug 2) and the Post-tryout Program Kickoff (Aug 11) and of course, the car wash (Sept 9)!
